“As a child growing up, I appreciated the importance and value of education. I enjoyed learning and did my best to do well. Though I was pretty good at it, I never particularly liked school. Actually, I thought it was somewhat boring and monotonous; however, I really enjoyed the extra- curricular activities and especially the field trips and opportunities to do things outside of the classroom – those were the things that carried me ‘over and through’ the sometimes-loathsome daily classroom grind.”

I always dreamed about a bigger stage or what it would be like to visit and spend time in other places and try different things! Now, as a mature adult, I can create programs and opportunities for kids like myself, who might be sparked by ‘a different positive life experience’.

“Like a lot of us, my perfect little life plan did not work out the way I thought it would, but that taught me a valuable life lesson:  As long as I am connected, rooted, and grounded to The Power Source, I will persevere!  I have embraced the role of servant and service to all mankind, and I am GRATEFUL that God is using an ordinary person like me to do extraordinary things in the lives of our youth and young adults.

I live by the motto of my favorite Scripture, Psalm 91:1-2. ‘He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust’.

RECOGNITION

While organizing and creating The Johnson School House Program, we were made aware of the historic Johnson School of Mer Rouge, LA. The historic Johnson School was initially established in 1926 and was highly instrumental in the early education of African Americans in Morehouse Parish from 1951 to 1970. The school was then closed and torn down; a memorial still stands today to celebrate the site. It seems that history has repeated itself…
